My father built the house I grew up in, and on his birthday the year the house had been a part of half his life, I made him this model.

I started the building process by modelling a type of skeleton of the house in SolidWorks. I made this with finger joints in the corners and slots so that it would fit on the basement section and be easy to assemble and disassemble during the building process.

The digital “skeleton” model

When I was happy with the computer modelling, I cut the pieces out of 3mm MDF with a laser cutter, and started cutting out some modelling foam (Ebazell 260) for the terrain.

Test fit of the pieces

For the cladding I used veneer that I cut up in thin strips and then superglued on.

After hours of gluing on cladding.

Some steps further down the process I had spray painted the cladding, and cut some H0 roof sheets to fit. These sheets were bought from a local model train shop along with the cats, the bike, the wheelbarrow and the people. I had also here started to add the trimmings around the windows and doors, I would rather have bought or 3d-printed these, but I did not have the opportunity for any of that.

Next up was the scenery. This was built up with foam and plaster of paris, which was then finished with some sand and paint.

The fireplace and the stone walls are taking shape.

To give the model a little something extra, I made a small birch tree out of wire, sand, glue, paint and some green scenery foam.

At this point the separate parts were added together, and some sand, grass and greenery finished it off.

To continue the building I now had to glue in the basement.
